'Batman Returns' set the all-time record for an opening last June with $45.7 million on its way to grossing more than $160 million, which is the top total this year. The weekend gross is the eighth best of all time for an opening, a mark set by 'Dracula' when it opened last weekend with $30.5 million. 'We're on Cloud Nine,' said studio distribution chief Tom Sherak. Analysts had expected an opening-weekend gross of around $25 million. The performance by the 20th Century Fox release is particularly impressive considering that many of the tickets were bought by children paying discounted prices. The original opened with $17.1 million at 1, 202 screens, then led the box office for three months.


'Home Alone 2,' hammered by most critics, is unlikely to duplicate the success of the original, which took in $285 million in its domestic run, the third highest total of all time, but it could take in somewhere in the $200 million range. It has played mostly to sell- outs to gross $612,078 at two screens in 12 days.
